Going into Game 3 on Infernal Shrines, FNATIC needed this win to stay in the match. Looking like the FNATIC of the previous matches, they took a level lead early and kept it, utilizing the Punishers and whittling away at structures when possible.
Team Dignitas could not stop the core push in the end and FNATIC got their first win. In Game 4 on Sky Temple, the game was close for most of the game, but FNATIC pulled away and successfully used the Temples to their advantage.
This game would go to FNATIC and send the Grand Finals to a Game 5. In Game 5 on Dragon Shire, the momentum was on the side of FNATIC, who had avoided a 3-game sweep from Team Dignitas and tied up the match in Game 4.
However Team Dignitas had level leads early and made good use of the Dragon Knight. A risky end game push to the core paid off as Team Dignitas took down the core, winning the HGC Western Clash.

May be the light to last year's darkness. Team Dignitas Wins the HEROES OF THE STORM HGC Western Clash Posted by Renee Lopez Mar 13, Games , Video Games 0.
DAY ONE UPPER BRACKET Match 1: 1 MISFITS VS 8 NOMIA Day 1 started with big games and big plays. Match 2: 5 TEAM DIGNITAS VS. Match 3: 2 TEMPO STORM VS 7 INFAMOUS Tempo Storm took on Latin American team Infamous in Match 3.
Match 4: 3 FNATIC vs 6 GALE FORCE ESPORTS Match 4 was the second EU vs NA matchup of the tournament and in Game 1 on Tomb of the Spider Queen this match did not disappoint.
LOWER BRACKET Match 1: 4 TEAM 8 vs 8 NOMIA After going up against the finest teams EU has to offer, Team 8 and Nomia faced a steep uphill battle to get back into the Clash.
Match 2: 6 GALE FORCE ESPORTS vs. DAY TWO With the elimination of the ANZ team Nomia and the Latin American team Infamous, the rest of the Western Clash was a showdown between the 3 North American teams and the 3 European teams.
UPPER BRACKET Match 1: 1 MISFITS vs 5 TEAM DIGNITAS Day 2 started with an EU vs EU match up with both teams coming off wins the previous day.
Match 2: 3 FNATIC vs 2 TEMPO STORM With both FNATIC and Tempo Storm coming off sweeps, Game 1 of this EU vs NA match, set on Towers of Doom looked to be quite the match.
LOWER BRACKET Match 1: 2 TEMPO STORM vs 4 TEAM 8 Now in the Lower Bracket, two North American teams faced off in a battle to advance in the tournament with Team 8 once again in danger of elimination.
Match 2: 5 TEAM DIGNITAS vs 6 GALE FORCE ESPORTS Our third NA vs EU match was the last of Day 2. DAY THREE UPPER BRACKET Match 1: 1 MISFITS vs 3 FNATIC Getting closer to the Grand Finals, Match 1 of Day 3 in the Upper Bracket pitted Misfits, coming off their win against Team Dignitas, against FNATIC, who were coming off their win against Tempo Storm.
LOWER BRACKET Match 1: 4 TEAM 8 vs 5 TEAM DIGNITAS As the last remaining NA team, Team 8 had to get through a rematch with Team Dignitas in order to advance to the Lower Bracket finals against Misfits.
Day 2 will begin the Best of 5 format and will feature two Upper Bracket matches and two Lower Bracket matches. Day 3 begins with the Upper Bracket semi-finals in a Best of 5, with the loser bumped down to await the winner of the Lower Bracket semi-finals.
The Grand Final will be a Best of 7 series between the Upper Bracket finalist and the winner of the Lower Bracket Final. The Upper Bracket finalist team begins the series with a one game advantage.
The legacy Team Dignitas has the most Clash championship titles, winning the Phase 1 and Phase 1 tournaments. With Team Dignitas failing to qualify for the Phase 2 Western Clash, Fnatic found very little competition and easily took the trophy.
As such, Europe is the long-standing top dog at the Western Clash. North America has consistently struggled to get a team into the top four, with Team 8 earning 4th place at Phase 1, Gale Force Esports earning 4th place at Phase 2, and Tempo Storm earning 3rd place at Phase 1.
Mirroring Team Dignitas from a year ago, Fnatic did not qualify for this event, making this the first Western Clash and LAN event that they have not participated in since the inception of the HGC.
The teams Leftovers EU Standing: 4th Place League Match Record: League Game Record: Leftovers had an outstanding start to Phase 2, managing not only to break out of the Crucible positions for the first time, but also qualifying for their first LAN event.
Mopsio has done wonders for this team, bringing the frontline control and team leadership necessary for them to secure 4th place in the EU HGC.
They go up against HeroesHearth on the first day, a difficult series for them. It is uncertain they will break into the top six at this event, but this team has the potential for an upset if they can maintain focus under pressure.
This team showed a great deal of innovation and ingenuity in the first phase of this year, but struggled when executing against the most elite teams.
With the return of BadBenny and adrd, the BlizzCon roster that defeated Team Dignitas is back together once again.
Their play so far has been clean and efficient, with a more standard style of play compared to Phase 1. Method is a strong contender for the top four.
Team Dignitas EU Standing: 1st Place League Match Record: League Game Record: Dignitas is undoubtedly the favorite to win the Western Clash.
The roster has performed in dominant fashion throughout the year and is nearly impossible to control through the draft. With a remarkable understanding of the macro game and an ability to dictate team fights with precision, there isn't much to be said about Dignitas that hasn't been mentioned already during their dominant run so far.
Team Liquid EU Standing: 2nd Place League Match Record: League Game Record: No one could have predicted that the role swap for Nurok to support would have gone so well.
Team Liquid came with guns blazing in Phase 2, bringing on Arcaner from Method as the ranged carry. Team Liquid will certainly be a contender for the top four and has a solid chance of facing Team Dignitas in the final.
HeroesHearth NA Standing: 1st Place League Match Record: League Game Record: The sweethearts of NA, HeroesHearth has developed a strong fan base with their run.
They, much like the Fnatic and Dignitas rosters of old, are proof of the strength acquired through keeping a roster together. Their worst showings at the Mid-Season Brawl had Arthelon in the off-lane and McIntyre flexing.
I personally believe the team is at its best with McIntyre controlling the off-lane, allowing Arthelon to bring his unique style of play in the flex role.
If they can play to their strengths, then the home-court advantage may push HHE to the Grand Final. Tempo Storm NA Standing: 2nd Place League Match Record: League Game Record: Tempo Storm, compared to their strong showing in Phase 1, is the wildcard of the tournament.
Their raw skill and experience is a non-issue, however the loss of Psalm is certainly weighing on the minds of Tempo Storm fans.
Despite the changes, Tempo Storm still managed to dominate in the first part of Phase 2. Unfortunately, their performance against HeroesHearth left much to be desired, resulting in a loss.
The quality is there, so it is up to Tempo Storm to rally the troops and support ViN in his first LAN event.
Team Freedom NA Standing: 3rd Place League Match Record: League Game Record: Team Freedom has consistently challenged the top ranked NA teams, but has yet to secure the top spot.
They are no strangers to LAN events either, competing at multiple Western Clashes and BlizzCon. Having kept the roster together throughout , they excel at manipulating the map, but will likely struggle team fighting against the top EU teams that match their macro.
Their first match is against Team Liquid, who is likely the favored to win. If Team Freedom can squeeze the hero pools of HasuObs and Arcaner, forcing them to play standard, they may be able to even the playing field.
Team Octalysis NA Standing: 4th Place League Match Record: League Game Record: Team Octalysis has experienced many ups and downs since their famous run as Roll Phase 2 brought them three five-game series, all of which resulted in losses some as reverse sweeps.
This is a team that is also steeped in experience, but seems to lack the focus to close out long series. Compared to the teams of HeroesHearth and Tempo Storm, the individual players of Octalysis lack consistency in their specific roles.
But like you said, Method could pull out the Murky. Next up we have HeroesHearth vs Leftovers. I feel like HeroesHearth is going to win that series, but a lot of people feel like HeroesHearth is the hope of NA.
As soon as you think you know the answer…. For the purposes of the bracket, I think HeroesHearth gets it.
Ok, Team Freedom vs Team Liquid. I like to call them the Renaissance Team of EU. Team Freedom is another of those we need to believe in ourselves kind of things.
I feel like Dignitas would win it. Tempo Storm is capable of winning, but they have to believe they can. I gotta give that to HeroesHearth.
I could easily see that going to game 5, but for all the momentum Team Liquid has developed, they also feel like one of the more inconsistent teams here.
Somehow, HeroesHearth always has this dynamic playstyle where they lose heroes early on but in these clutch moments they have scrappy team fights, and they look dominant from there.
In a scramble, HeroesHearth would come out on top. HeroesHearth has always played the macro game.
I feel like Liquid would struggle against that. Medivh was fringe and at least he is getting his rework now. Unlike last year's tournaments, I didn't watch much of the Western Clash and seeing the same heroes again and again and again was the main reason, the lower game length another culprit.
Despite my favorite Grubby missing, casting overall - as far as I can tell - was very professional and involved. The analytics part on the other hand was worse than last year.
I'm super interested to see how the Eastern Clash meta is gonna be different. Obviously Maiev and Blaze dominance, but I'm curious to see if Tracer is still the no.
Some of the players like Rich, sCsC and dami are also known for Greymane play, and obviously it's a staple in Chinese meta for so long now, so looking forward to that.
